THE TRUTH BEHIND THE SCRIPTURE
"IF THOU CANST BELIEVE" - This was an answer to the request, and there was a reference in the answer to the "doubt" in the man's mind about the power of Jesus. "I" can help him. If thou" canst believe," it shall be done. Jesus here demanded "faith" or confidence in his power of healing. His design here is to show the man that the difficulty in the case was not in the want of "power" on his part, but in the want of "faith" in the man; in other words, to rebuke him for having "doubted" at all whether he "could" heal him. So he demands faith of every sinner that comes to him, and none that come without "confidence" in him can obtain the blessing.
All things are possible to him that believeth - All things can be effected or accomplished - to wit, by God - in favor of him that believes, and if thou canst believe, this will be done. God will do nothing in our favor without faith. It is right that we should have confidence in him; and if we "have" confidence, it is easy for him to help us, and he willingly does it. In our weakness, then, we should go to God our Saviour; and though we have no strength, yet "he" can aid us, and he will make all things easy for us.
STRONG'S CONCORDANCE:
"YOU CAN"... I am powerful, have (the) power, (b) I am able, I can. Of uncertain affinity; to be able or possible.
"ALL THINGS"...All, the whole, every kind of. Including all the forms of declension; apparently a primary word; all, any, every, the whole.
"ARE POSSIBLE"... of persons: powerful, able, (b) of things: possible. From dunamai; powerful or capable; neuter possible.
BELIEVES"...From pistis; to have faith, i.e. Credit; by implication, "TO ENTRUST".
The key to understanding this scripture is the word "believe". The dictionary definition of believe is: to accept something as true, or real. To have a firm or wholehearted religious conviction or persuasion : to regard the existence of God as a fact. To have a firm conviction as to the goodness, efficacy, or ability of something. To hold an opinion : think.
The depth of the meaning of "believe" is magnified by the definition of "TO "ENTRUST" (one of the Greek (pisteuonti) meanings of the word "believe".
TO ENTRUST... to confer a trust on, especially : to deliver something in trust to; to commit to another with confidence.
1... "No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day." -John 6:44 The Greek definition of draw is "To drag, draw, pull, persuade, unsheathe." The word "unsheathe" is interesting. Our calling is like a sword being drawn out from a covering, the scabbard. It is the beginning of understanding the Bible, God's Word, a two-edged sword, that was hidden from view.
2... " Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,"Acts 3:19
3... "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."
4... "Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit."
We are ENTRUSTED two things, the truth of God and His Holy Spirit. He is "committing to us with confidence". He is "delivering to us in trust". Then we can have the faith of Christ in us, not our human faith, but the actual faith of Christ. It is the faith of Christ in us, not having a faith in Christ, which is a human faith.
5... "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:" -Philippians 2:5 That would be having the mind of Christ in our mind.
6... "Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" -Romans 3:22-23
7... "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God." -Romans 8:14
