THE TRUTH BEHIND THE SCRIPTURE
"Sleep" is often used to describe "death". To understand this comparison, anyone who has passed out or been in a coma, has no knowledge of anything happening, until they wake up. Even a deep sleep with no dreaming gives us an idea of this concept of "sleep". We can go to sleep at 10:00 PM and wake up at 6:00 AM and have no concept of any time passing.
Daniel 12:2 is referring to a time of a resurrection from the dead, having been "asleep" in the dust of the earth. Some will awake to eternal life and some will awake to shame and everlasting contempt.
“Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned". -John 5:28-29
Now, using some inspired logic, if a person automatically goes to heaven or hell (as taught by most religions), they would be living in these two locations for who knows how many years as we count time. AND THEN, when it is time for our Messiah to return to earth they go back into their graves to be dead again. Then they rise out of their graves at His appearing to be judged. If this was true, those condemned to hell and eternal torture suddenly receive a "get out of jail free card", judged and thrown back into hell again. What this would mean is that they have not been judged before going to "hell" (as believed by the many) and that would mean they never received, so to speak, their "time in court". Going a little deeper into the subject (pun intended), if this were to be true, it would mean there are three deaths and not just the SECOND DEATH mentioned in Revelation 20.
The Apostle Paul wrote the same message, "and I have the same hope in God as these men themselves have, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked". -Acts 24:15
The resurrection of the righteous and the wicked are two separate events and do not happen at the same time. The time sequence is found in Revelation 20.
The Apostle John wrote of this revealing from Christ, And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. Revelation 20:4
This is the resurrection to eternal life for those "who have done what is good", the resurrection of the righteous. The last part of verse 5 and the beginning of verse 6 of Revelation 20 makes it very clear about this resurrection of the righteous,
5 ...This is the first resurrection.
The fate of the unrighteous, the incorrigible, those incapable of being corrected or reformed, those impossible to control or manage, is found in Revelation 20.
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
What is revealed in these scriptures is in stark contrast and 180 degrees the opposite of what is commonly taught about death. The popular belief is that death is eternal life in another location. One should honestly ask themselves, is it an act of Godly (agape) love to torture a human being for all eternity? The Lake of Fire is the final place for both Death and Hell (hades-the grave). Death will no longer exist. The grave we all go to will no longer exist. Those that are not written in the Book of Life are cast into the same Lake of Fire that Death and Hell are cast into. All three no longer exist. What will become of those that reject God and His expectations of us in reference to repentance and overcoming?
MALACHI 4:1...For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.
MALACHI 4:2...But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.
MALACHI 4:3...And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts.
Those that choose death instead of life will mercifully be put out of their misery. It will be as if they never were born human and never existed.
