THE TRUTH BEHIND THE SCRIPTURE

This verse has some very deep spiritual understanding buried within the meaning of the words. "Cause me to hear", or better translated "Let me hear" covers a lot of territory.

THE GREEK DEFINITION: Cause me to hear...

1...to hear, listen to, obey 2...to hear (perceive by ear) 3...to hear with attention or interest 4...to understand (language) 5...to hear (of judicial cases) 6...to listen, give heed 7...to consent, agree 8...to grant request 9... to listen to, yield to 10... to obey, be obedient 11...to be regarded, be obeyed.

To hear implies perceiving, understanding, giving heed, consenting to and agreeing, yielding to, obeying and being obedient. All of this takes place at the beginning of the day, to get us started with the right perspective. As humans we really don't even know the way we should walk. We have to be taught.

The second use of the word "cause" is a different word than the first use at the beginning of the verse. This word means "teach me": 1...) to know 2... learn to know 3...to perceive and see, find out and discern 4...to discriminate, distinguish 5...to know by experience 6...to recognize, admit, acknowledge, confess 7... to know how, be skillful 8...to have knowledge, be wise 10... to be instructed.

The "way" is a road, distance, journey, manner, a path or journey, a direction, manner, habit, a course of life, of moral character.

The "walk" is very similar to the "way'. The walk we take must be the way to go. The walk is our manner of life we choose.

David is asking God to let him hear, which is a show of humility, essentially asking God to put within him a mind willing to listen to God. He wants God to teach him the way of life, the path to a successful life of overcoming and having the mind of God in him. It is a course of life we must traverse that includes moral character.
