THE STORY BEHIND THE SCRIPTURE

The word "Pure" comes from the Greek word kathara which translates "clean".   Catharsis and cathartic both trace to the Greek word kathairein, meaning “to cleanse, purge.” Catharsis entered English as a medical term having to do with purging the body—and especially the bowels—of unwanted material. The adjective cathartic entered English with a meaning descriptive of such a physically cleansing purge. It didn’t take long for people to start using these words figuratively in reference to emotional release and spiritual cleansing.  Cleansing one's self from the "filth of the world" is a very cathartic process.

The Greek word amiantos translates as undefiled, untainted, free from contamination, unsoiled, and pure.

The lesson for us today is that we are to be untainted and morally clean from the "filth of the world", i.e., spiritually and morally cleansed, refusing to let the world corrupt you.

This requires Biblical Study and historical research to prove what is the "filth of the world".

Having done this, the next step is to apply or be a doer of the word.  This means visiting the orphans and widows (literal and figurative) in their times of trouble, persecution, tribulation and distress.  The Greek word is philbo which means "pressure".  What is a figurative widow?  That would be a woman who is married but her husband has no connection or takes no part in the Church or they are separated through divorce.
