THE TRUTH BEHIND THE SCRIPTURE

The vast majority of mankind does not consider the things of the Eternal. At the present time, this is an invisible world, because they are spiritually asleep, living in their daily dream world, oblivious to any eternal consequences. Reading the previous verses gives context to understanding 1 Thessalonians 5:9.

1:5..."Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness"

1 Thessalonians 1:6..."Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober."

1 Thessalonians 1:7..."For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night."

1 Thessalonians 1:8..."But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation."

And now verse 9:

NOT APPOINTED... "To put, place, lay, set, fix, establish."

TO WRATH... "desire, i.e., violent passion (justifiable) abhorrence); by implication punishment."

TO OBTAIN..."Acquiring, obtaining, possessing, possession, ownership. More than “obtain;” the Greek means “acquire” by one’s own efforts;” earn and make our own.”

SALVATION..."rescue or safety."

It is not set, fixed or established that we are destined to punishment, if we choose the route to safety and can be rescued by "our Lord Jesus Christ". We are given free will to choose. We choose by going the less traveled road following Christ or the four lane smooth highway chosen by the majority in two ways, through neglect or being blinded by "the god of this world."

2 Corinthians 4:4..."In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."

To cap the subject with some finality: "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." -James 1:17
