THE TRUTH BEHIND THE SCRIPTURE
BROTHERLY KINDNESS: from the Greek Word, philadelphian, which translates, Brotherly love, love of Christian brethren. From philadelphos; fraternal affection.
The world we live in today is one of impersonal virtual relationships and self promotion. What it really means to be kind one to another is lost. As Christians, we are called to become like Jesus Christ ("Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:" -Phillipians 2:5)
The Apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 4:31-32, "Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you".
Bitterness is a carnal frame of mind that creates a state of thinking that refuses to forgive. Wrath and anger result in violent outbreaks of uncontrolled rage. Clamor is shouting and loud arguing or quarreling. Slander is evil speaking and malice is wickedness.
The original Greek word translated "be kind to one another" literally means to "keep on becoming kind toward one another".
BEING KIND TO ONE ANOTHER IS NOT OPTIONAL FOR CHRISTIANS.
The Apostle Paul further instructs in Colossians 3:12-14, "Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness".
Kindness is the helpful spirit that sees the need of another person and becomes motivated to respond with good deeds.
What is the importance of "these things"?
"For if 'these things'... (DILIGENCE, FAITH, VIRTUE, KNOWLEDGE, SELF-CONTROL, PERSEVERANCE, GODLINESS, BROTHERLY KINDNESS, LOVE) be in you, and abound, they make you that you shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 1:8)
"But he who lacks 'these things'... (DILIGENCE, FAITH, VIRTUE, KNOWLEDGE, SELF-CONTROL, PERSEVERANCE, GODLINESS, BROTHERLY KINDNESS, LOVE) is blind, and cannot see afar off, and has forgotten that he was purged from his old sins." (2 Peter 1:9)
